The Interest rate argument is flawed?

Why do people keep refering to the high interest rates on their homes in the 80’s. 17% of $100 000 home is far less that 7.75% on a $300 000 of the average home today. People are actually paying alot more in interest now than ever. More people are losing their homes now (its at record levels) than under the Labor Party of the 80’s. I was there in the 80’s and we lost our home. Back then governments set interest rates until Labor handed it to the Reserve bank, now they set it and always will. Build a bridge a get over it. Rather lose my home than my workers rights, pay and conditions and that of my children.

Yes, it is a simple argument that 17% is higher than 8%. However, 8% now represents a much larger proportion of family income than it did in the 1980’s

Many mortgagees had loans that were capped at 13.5%.
The other thing was that loans were more difficult to obtain and there was no such thing as easy credit. So you didn’t get people into loans who should never have had one. The mortgage was probably the only major debt a family had. Now you can easily get $10000 limit on any number of credit cards at 18% and more.

Of course, anyone who was living off savings, such as old age pensioners, was making good money from their bank. And banks weren’t charging a fee to keep your money. And it was much easier to see a GP and get bulk-billed.

Reserve Bank interest rates reached 21.4% in April 1982 when John Howard was Treasurer. The “housing rate” peaked at 12% under Keating but 13% under Howard in 1982.
